To ensure the high quality of our beer and to better understand the sensory drivers of consumer liking, sensory evaluation techniques are widely used within Heineken. Three trained panels perform daily sensory tests in our state-of-the-art facilities to support Research & Innovation, Commerce and for quality monitoring purposes.


The section Sensory and Analytical Services, part of Research and Innovation, is responsible for the development of sensory methodologies, maintenance of the sensory panels, correct set up of sensory experiments and advice on consumer research.


Additionally, the section supports the 180 Operating Companies of Heineken worldwide with the set-up and maintenance of their own sensory quality control panels.

Job description:

The senior sensory scientist will expand and assure Sensory within Heineken. You will develop, grow and execute state of the art Consumer and Sensory research programs that support innovation and business initiatives. Promoting, data analysis, reporting, presentation of the results, giving advice and innovation on sensory will be an important part of your job.

The main tasks will be:

  • To grow, maintain and implement the field of Sensory & Consumer Science across the organization in close cooperation with Group Commerce.
  • To give direction to the business/projects by providing adequate advice and the appropriate sensory/consumer data.
  • To identify, develop and validate new methodologies that answer questions where traditional methods have had little success answering.
  • To ensure the selection of the right test(s), data treatment and interpretation of the data to meet the clients’/projects’ objective(s).
  • To give sensory support to Research & Innovation and other departments within Heineken (such as trend monitoring and shelf-life studies, preference mapping, modeling of DoE based sensory data).


Competence requirements:

The successful candidate holds a M.Sc. or PhD degree in (a related field to) sensory science, experience in food & beverage is preferred.


As a senior sensory scientist, a strong background within the sensory and foods industry is essential. The candidate will have an in depth knowledge of the sensory field and has experience in managing people and projects. The candidate holds a successful track record in the area of sensory/consumer that is recognized in the sensory profession external to the company. The candidate is an expert in statistical analysis and interpretation of advanced and standard sensory and consumer data; experience with SPSS, XLStat, Unscrambler, Senstools is a pre.

  • Use FIZZ software to build tests and execute with consumer panel, and prepare data for analysis.
  • Manage the testing facility, including scheduling workers, maintaining supplies, securing incentives, coordinating services for the facility, and solving issues in coordination with the Sensory and  Consumer Manager.
  • Manage facility calendar


People development (20%)

  • Train contract workers in the principles of consumer research and the specifics of each research project.


Knowledge development (5%)

  • Keep up with new developments in the field of sensory and consumer research to adapt, apply and improve sensory evaluation methods within Nestlé
  • Develop and maintain network with Nestlé Research and Development


Profile:

  • Academic background in Food Science, Food Technology or similar at university level
  • Experience with sensory and/or consumer research methods
  • Fluency in German (French) language required; Good to fluent in English (spoken and written)
  • Computer literacy in MS Office, Fizz Software (beneficial)
  • Fluency in German and English mandatory (written and spoken) other languages are a plus
  • Good communication skills
  • Excellent analytical and practical skills
  • Curiosity, initiative and result orientation
  • Team spirit, motivation and organization skills
